Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Review Committee: First Report to the Minister of Health: June 2005 to June 2007
Date of publication: October 2007
This 32 page report is the first report to the Minister of Health from this ministerial committee. PMMRC was established in 2005 to advise the minister on prevention of perinatal and maternal deaths. This report describes the setting up of the committee, the process developed to collect information about perinatal deaths and classification of deaths using the perinatal society of Australia and New Zealand classification system. The report also describes the establishment of a maternal working group to review maternal deaths in New Zealand.
Important related issues are also briefly discussed such as post-mortems of babies, support for bereaved families and issues for Māori related to perinatal and maternal death. Annual reports from mid 2008 will include numbers of deaths as collected by the committee.
The terms of reference of the committee are provided and the report lists the agents of the committee appointed in accordance with legislation and the DHB coordinators.
